Cable Internet DSL Wireless Service ISDN Service T1 Transport / Managed IP

Can I have more than one computer in my house use cable internet access?

  • Yes, all you need is a Local Area Network set up between the computers.

Can I run my own web server?

  • Not on the Basic connection and only limited servers on the Business connection (pricing available on a quotation basis). The City Cable network is designed as a shared service and not intended to be used for serving files via ftp, http or Napster-like servers. We permit downloading of files, but we require that you do not act as a server; however, you CAN connect several computers together as a LAN. Violators who do not heed warnings will be reported to City Cable and access revoked for 3 months or more based on the abuse.

How much does the equipment cost?

  • City Cable requires all customers to use a specific cable modem that best fits their digital network. So rather than charging you $150-$200 for the cable modem, they will provide the modem for a $5 per month charge on your Municipal Utilities/City Cable bill. You will need an Ethernet connection on your computer or a USB port which will connect your computer to the cable modem.

Is it hard to set up the computer?

  • Actually, this service is provided with your cable modem installation charges. Before the technician leaves, your computer will be configured and software installed for you to surf at speeds up to 20 times faster than a dial-up connection.

Can I switch from DSL to cable?

  • Yes, switching is easy.

Do I have to subscribe to cable TV?

  • No. Although many of our staff have signed up for City Cable's television service and are very pleased, there is no need for you to sign up for cable television to get cable internet. The two services are completely separate and remain unbundled at this time.
What exactly is a cable modem and how does it work?
  • A cable modem is a digital modem that uses a coaxial cable connection (same as cable TV, except filtered) for the data. This data connection is received by a cable modem that decodes the signal into your PC. This cable line is typically filtered and separate from the rest of the cable TV lines in your house.

What does “up to 20 times faster than a dial-up connection” mean?

  • This depends on which package you choose (256k or 512k) and also what speed your modem connects to the internet. Many users still only connect (due to modem limitations and the local telephone lines) at only 26.4k. Also, because of the analog-digital conversions necessary in dialup modems, many errors occur causing data to be sent multiple times. Below is a table showing approximate connection speed increases over dialup service.

Modem Speed 256K Cable 512K Cable
26.4K 10x Faster 20x Faster
33K 8x Faster 16x Faster
53K 5x Faster 10x Faster
